The Masters
Jon Rahm wins the first major of the year at Augusta National. It was a long Sunday, with the leaders having to finish 12 holes from their third round in the morning before the final round. After starting the morning three back, Rahm entered the final round only two behind Brooks Koepka. Koepkaโs lead disappeared by the back nine, with Koepka making three bogeys on his front nine and failing to take advantage of the par 5s.
For Rahm, it was an impressive display tee-to-green throughout the week. Making only a single bogey in his final round, Rahm put the pressure on Koepka throughout Sunday. Rahm shut down any hope for a late comeback with a birdie from the pine straw on 14, while Koepka made a costly bogey after a poor drive.
Other notables for the final round were Phil Mickelson carding a 65, the low round of Sunday, and finishing tied for second. Another past champion, Jordan Spieth, climbed into the top 5 with a final round 66. Sahith Theeghala had a big chip in on 16 to get within the top 10 and secure an invite for next yearโs Masters.
Sam Bennett from Texas A&M won the low amateur. While he started the weekend within striking distance of the leaders, he faded on Sunday but still put up a remarkable finish for an amateur and his first time around Augusta.
It was a two-man race on Sunday, and Rahm left no doubt of who the best player was this week. Despite facing the more difficult draw of tee times and starting the tournament with a 4-putt double bogey, Rahm still cleared the field to win by 4. With the victory, he becomes the first European player to win both a US Open and a Masters. The win is also Rahmโs 4th win of 2023 already!
Korea LPGA - Lotte Rent A Car Ladies Open
Ye Won Lee won the year's first event on the Korean LPGA tour. The conditions proved difficult at Lotte Skyhill Jeju, with only 5 of the 120 players in the field breaking par.
Japan LPGA - Fuji Film Studio Alice Ladies Open
Miyu Yamashita captured the shortened event in Japan. The weather forced the first round to be canceled, and the champion was crowned after 36 holes.
