Ryder Cup

Team Europe held on in Sunday Singles to win the Ryder Cup 16.5 to 11.5 and bring the trophy back to the European side.

For a brief moment on Sunday, there looked to be a glimmer of hope for the American side to get the 14 points needed to retain, but Team Europe closed the door in the late matches, with Tommy Fleetwood ultimately providing the winning point.

The American team was playing off their back foot after a dreadful start on Friday in Foursomes, losing all four of the matches and then going winless with three ties Friday afternoon. The move to start the Cup with Foursomes proved to be a great call by European captain Luke Donald and set the tone early that the Europeans were ready for the stage in Rome.

After going winless on Friday, the Americans put up more of a fight on Saturday with an inspired afternoon session from the hatless Patrick Cantlay. His string of three birdies on the last three holes closed out McIlroy and Fitzpatrick to keep the US within 5 points and an outside chance to come back on Sunday.

Needing only 4 points on Sunday to win the Cup, Luke Donald put out his stars in the early matches. Leading the charge was Jon Rahm, who had to take on World Number 1 Scottie Scheffler. In a back-and-forth battle, Rahm made it to the 18th hole one down. At a hole he eagled on Friday to capture a half-point, Rahm was able to birdie on Sunday and get another half-point for Team Europe. For the United States side, if they were going to mount a comeback, they needed a full point out of Scheffler, who ended the week without a win.

The three big guns for Europe, Jon Rahm, Viktor Hovland, and Rory McIlroy, showed up in a big way, combining for a 9-2-3 record. All three led the way in the team sessions, guiding European rookies while rising to the big moments when needed. Before the week, it was clear Europe was going to lean heavily on these three, and they delivered, keeping the Cup in Europe.

The European Team will now look to Bethpage in 2025 with the more difficult task of defending on foreign soil.

Asian Games

Taichi Kho from Hong Kong and Arpichaya Yubol from Thailand claimed the two individual gold medals in golf at the Asian Games held in Hangzhou.

On the team competition side, South Korea won on the men’s side, and Thailand won the women’s. The win by the South Korean team was notable in providing PGA tour golfers Sungjae Im and Si Woo Kim exemptions from 21 months of mandatory military service.
