PGA Championship
The year's second major starts on Thursday in Rochester, New York. The defending champion is Justin Thomas, and the last winner of the PGA Championship held at Oak Hill was Jason Dufner, who withdrew earlier in the week.
The site, Oak Hill Country Club, is a Donald Ross course that has undergone a restoration by Andrew Green since the last time the PGA Championship was held there in 2013. One of the changes highlighted is the steep and bold bunker shapings which should make the bunkers play more like a hazard than a bailout this week. The Fried Egg did an excellent piece covering the changes with Andrew Green:
The top 2 players in the world, Jon Rahm and Scottie Scheffler have been trading off wins so far in 2023. Itโs no surprise they are the favorites heading into the second major. Rahm will be well rested after skipping the last two weeks, and his most recent finish is a solo second in Mexico. On the other hand, Scheffler is coming off a T5 finish last week at the Byron Nelson.
Jordan Spieth is battling a left wrist injury but appeared at the range on Tuesday, and it looks like he will give it a go for a chance to complete the career Grand Slam.
Other players to watch:
Tony Finau won three weeks ago at the Mexico Open and has made the cut in all 12 events he has played in 2023. If the course plays long in cold conditions, he has the distance to keep up.
Rickie Fowler is another player who hasnโt missed a cut all year, and his last three finishes are trending in the right direction (T14, T15, and T10). If not this week, he is primed to break through soon.
Ladies European Tour - Aramco Team Series - Florida
The second Aramco Team Series event of 2023 is being held at Trump International West Palm Beach. The format is a three-day stroke play event alongside a team event that includes three pros and one amateur on Friday and Saturday.
The field is headlined by Lydia Ko and Lexi Thompson, along with last weekโs LET winner in France, Linn Grant.
Japan LPGA - Bridgestone Ladies Open
The 12th event of the year on the Japan LPGA is taking place in Toyota, Japan.
Korea LPGA - Doosan Match Play Championship
This week there is a Match Play event in Korea. The format is similar to the WGC Match Play earlier in the year on the menโs side: 64 players in the field play in 3 rounds of group-stage matches to make a 16-player bracket with knockout rounds to crown a winner. An exciting format that includes a lot of golf over five days.
Korn Ferry Tour - AdventHealth Championship
Opposite the PGA Championship, the Korn Ferry Tour hosts an event in Kansas City at Blue Hills Country Club.
Japan Golf Tour - Golf Partner Pro-Am Tournament
The Japan Golf Tour is playing its 5th event of the season in Ibaraki, Japan.
Sunshine Tour - Zanaco Masters
The Sunshine tour heads to Lusaka, Zambia, for the Zambia Masters. This is the second event in the new season.
